Question of the Day
That which was the final play you saw (dramatic or musical)? If you have never witnessed a play, please feel thanks for visiting offer what play you'd most want to see.The final one I saw through the miracle of television was Anna Deavere Smith's amazing one-lady show Allow Me To Lower Easy, video which Deeks has here. The final one I saw live would be a local senior high school manufacture of Footloose, that was remarkably terrific.

Today in Fat Hatred
[Content Note: Body fat hate misogyny heterocentrism.]Erica Barnett emails, that we am discussing with permission:A genuine jewel in the WSJ: "Mixed-Weight Couples Report More Conflict." [Presently entitled: "Stop 'Do I Look Body fat?'"]Accurate translation: Douchebag dudes who say such things as, "I suppose you are certainly one of individuals individuals who looks better in clothes" justifiably piss off female partners. Try not to worry, there is a happy ending: If women just count calories and slim down, their partners will discover them attractive again! (The "study," for example it had been, incorporated just 43 hetero couples and just found "elevated conflict" once the lady was body fat and also the guy was critical.)The content is filled with awesome stuff, like: "Even individuals who aren't overweight can obsess regarding their appearance (sadly, these mostly are usually women)."Sadly, that's incorrect. Literally, I am unable to think about just one guy I understand well who has not, on multiple occasions, stated something in my experience denigrating and/or fretting about his appearance. It's more socially acceptable, as far as that it's expected, for ladies to openly "obsess" regarding their looks, but it's flatly false that males don't share this eminently human response to residing in a vicious culture of judgment that encourages shameless body regulating. The main difference isn't that males do not have body issues, but that:1. Many of us are socialized to see women's physiques as public property, and therefore women are disproportionately exposed to critique on any failure to adapt to some kyriarchal beauty standard.2. Males (especially males who partner with females) are urged to police their partners' physiques for beauty, while women (especially ladies who partner with males) are urged to police their partners' physiques for health. A guy should be accountable for ensuring his wife does not "let herself go," while a lady should be accountable for ensuring her husband eats his veggies.3. Males who're joined with females are judged by their partners' appearance a lot more than ladies who are joined with males. A guy having a body fat/unattractive wife is judged in most types of ways in which a lady having a body fat/unattractive husband is not. He, using the body fat/unattractive wife, should have a problem with him. He, using the more appealing wife, should be quite a great guy and is not she lucky! These aren't absolutes. But there's an entire world at play here that describes why, exactly, it is just the couples using the body fat spouses and demanding husbands who experience "elevated conflict." And just what underwrites that critique to begin with.

[Content Note: Rape culture.]Left in reaction to Aphra's publish about rape culture and campus security:Rubbish, consider the amounts of false rape allegationsThat's it. The entire comment.I'll always be amused by colossal dipshits nobody think they have "got us" by shedding a mention of the "false rape accusations" into comments," as though we may have unsuccessful to see that "false rape accusations" (that are frequently not really really false) tend to be more infrequent than false reviews of vehicle thievery, that is itself rare—and the number of "false rape accusations" is dependant on reported rapes. If nonreported rapes were incorporated, the proportion of "false rape accusations" could be even more compact.Consider the amounts of false rape accusations. I've, mister. Perhaps you have?

States:New research from the think tank attached to the West Point Military Academy highlights the threat of violent far-right actions within the U . s . States, resulting in the final outcome that, while diverse in within their causes, they're similar within their utilization of violence to attain their aims.West Point's Combatting Terrorism Center began as a direct consequence from the Sept. 11 attacks, and it has mainly focused its research on worldwide terrorist risks. Entitled "Competitors in the Sidelines: Understanding America's Violent Far-Right," this new report rather appears to be the danger that domestic groups pose towards the U.S. Wearing down such groups into three groups — the Racist/Whitened Supremacy Movement, the Anti-Federalist Movement, and also the Christian Fundamentalist Movement — enables the research to look at the backdrop ideologies and techniques of every subset completely, in opposition to lumping them altogether since many research has. Each one of the types within the study represent competing ideological sights, without them prone to cooperate in achieving their aims. The probabilities that all these groups uses violence also varies. The things they share, however, is really a utilization of violence against their selected targets — whether it is minority races or abortion treatment centers — to highlight and stress their given ideology. Naturally, conservatives happen to be refuting the research with great comebacks like: "The $64,000 dollar real question is when will the Combating Terrorism Center publish their study real left-wing terrorists such as the Animal Liberation Front, Earth Liberation Front, and also the Weather Subterranean?"That rhetorical is nearly TOO perfect.I'm not sure what else I'm able to say about rightwing eliminationist violence which i haven't already stated fully a million occasions. Deficiencies in empathy permitted to fester unchallenged will in the end be a violent urge. We can't indulge this toxic intolerance with stories of "each side get their extremists" as it were more.

Feminism 101: On Owning and Owing
You do not own me. I do not own you.My body system is mine. Bodies are yours. My physical space is mine, as well as your physical space is yours, unless of course we invite each other in and respect the limitations while there. The spaces we build—physical spaces like house, and conceptual spaces like home, and virtual spaces, and also the spaces by which relationships and allegiances and romantic love might be forged—are our very own, except where they're communally built.I do not owe you explanations in my options that don't affect you, and also you don't owe any in my experience.I do not owe a presentation of my self, an expression of my identity, a conformance to randomly defined norms or archetypes, a psychological response, or perhaps a facial expression to help you comfortable. You don't owe me these things. If you would like me to smile, don't let me know to smile. Just produce something to smile about.

So the President Gave a Press Conference Yesterday...
And that he spoken about deficit reduction, lifting your debt ceiling, and gun reform. The entire transcript is here now. There is nothing particularly amazing concerning the presser: He was more conservative around the economy than If only he'd be, and spoken more about his favorite fantasy by which "good sense dominates" to ensure that we are able to arrived at "bipartisan solutions," however i thought this bit on gun reform was excellent:I am certain that you will find some steps that people may take that do not require legislation which are inside my authority as leader. Where you receive a step which has the chance to lessen the potential of gun violence, then I wish to proceed and go. ...I believe, for instance, the way we are gathering data, for instance, on guns that fall under both your hands of crooks and just how we track more effectively -- there might be some steps that people may take administratively, compared -- through legislation. So far as people arranging and buying more guns, you realize, I believe that we have seen for a while since individuals who oppose any common-sense gun control or gun safety precautions possess a pretty efficient way of ginning up fear for gun proprietors that in some way the government government's going to take all of your guns away. And also you know, that -- there's most likely a fiscal element to that particular. It clearly will work for business. However I believe that, you realize, individuals people who see this problem have frequently stated that responsible gun proprietors, those who have a gun for defense, for hunting, for sportsmanship -- they do not have anything to bother with. The problem here's not whether we feel within the Second Amendment. The problem is, exist some sensible steps that people may take to make certain that a person such as the individual in Newtown can't enter a college and gun lower a lot of children inside a -- inside a shockingly rapid fashion? But we are able to do something positive about that. And -- but -- you realize, but -- but area of the challenge that, you realize, we confront is, is the fact that the sight -- smallest hint of some sensible, responsible legislation in this region stands this notion that in some way here it comes down which everybody's guns will be removed. It is unfortunate, but that is the situation, and when you appear at -- within the first 4 years of my administration, we have attempted to firm up and enforce a few of the laws and regulations which were already around the books. But it would be pretty difficult to reason that in some way gun proprietors have experienced their privileges infringed. I truly love the Leader known as the fearmongering from the gun industry and straight stated that they are manufacturing paranoia since it is "great for business." Directly on.

Quote of the Day
[Content Note: Guns violence terrorism.]"V . P . Biden is asking the Leader to bypass Congress and employ executive privilege—executive to prohibit assault rifles and also to impose more stringent gun control. Fuck that. I am suggesting when that occurs, it is going to spark a civil war, and I'm going to be glad to fireplace the very first shot. I am not setting up by using it. You should not endure it. And That I need whatever you patriots to begin considering what you are likely to do, load your damn magazines, make certain your rifle's clean, pack a backpack with a few food inside it, and prepare to battle. I am not fucking setting up with this particular. I'm not letting my country be ruled with a dictator. I am not letting anybody take my guns! Whether it goes 1 inch further, I am likely to start killing people."—James Yeager, Boss of Tactical Response, a business concentrating in weapons and tactical training, situated in Tennessee. Sandusky Appeals
[Content Note: Sexual violence.]Former Penn Condition football prince Jerry Sandusky, who had been sentenced in October "not to under 3 decades and a maximum of six decades imprisonment with credit for time offered" for that sexual abuse of 10 boys, is appealing his conviction. Sandusky's lawyers reason that there is inadequate evidence to convict him, which a legal court did not permit them lots of time to get ready for trial, following the prosecution flooded all of them with documentation.Additionally they maintain that particular counts were too broad and general and really should therefore happen to be ignored. The possible lack of specifics further avoided Sandusky from planning an sufficient defense, they've stated....This primary make an effort to overturn the conviction according to ineffective counsel, a typical appeals tactic, is going to be tough, his lawyers have stated, but when a legal court rejects it, they are able to launch new appeals according to different factors from the law."If won by you on among the appeal issues, everything most likely falls," defense attorney Joe Amendola has stated. "All we must do is convince an appellate court that certain from the issues we'll raise is worth a reversal."Since you may recall, Amendola may be the comedian who known as the trial a cleaning soap opera, and, when requested which, responded, "My children." Exactly what a neat guy he's.Everybody, even and particularly individuals billed with heinous crimes, deserve a energetic defense. But Jerry Sandusky wasn't railroaded. He was defended in the court by expert defense lawyers, and that he had lots of unofficial defenders within the public square. His sufferers claimed, and posted themselves to defense questioning. He challenged 400 years imprisonment, and also got a present of the sentence. You're ready to let it rest alone. But Sandusky will not let it rest alone. He's never been worried about his victims' safety or peace, and that he is not going to begin right now.

RIP Gerda Lerner
Gerda Lerner, who assisted found the discipline of women's history within the U . s . States, died. She was 92. Within the mid-sixties, equipped with a doctoral ever from Columbia College along with a dissertation on two abolitionist siblings from Sc, Dr. Lerner joined an academic world by which women’s history scarcely been around. The amount of historians thinking about the topic, she told The Brand New You are able to Occasions in 1973, “could have squeeze into a mobile phone booth.” “In my courses, the instructors explained in regards to a world by which on the face one-half the people does everything significant and also the partner doesn’t exist,” Dr. Lerner told The Chicago Tribune in 1993. “I requested myself how this checked against my very own existence experience. ‘This is garbage this isn't the planet in which i've resided,’ I stated.” That picture transformed quickly, mainly due to her efforts while teaching at Sarah Lawrence College in early seventies. In developing a graduate program there, Dr. Lerner go about attempting to establish women’s history like a respected academic discipline and also to raising the status of ladies within the historic profession. She also started gathering and posting the main source material — journals, letters, speeches and so forth — that will allow historians to rebuild the lives of ladies. “She managed to get happen,” stated Alice Kessler-Harris, a brief history professor at Columbia. “She established women’s history as not only a valid but a central section of scholarship. Should you take a look at any library today, you will notice 100s of books about them.” Lerner's contributions when it comes to posting archival sources like Black Women in Whitened America: A Documentary History (1972) was immense. Also was her readiness, like a whitened feminist historian, to confront the "sisterhood myth" of historic relations between black ladies and whitened women. Upon finding there is "more proof of tension than of sisterhood"(Most Finds Its Past, 1979), she abandoned that myth looking for an intellectual framework that incorporated the variety of women's history as impacted by race, class, ethnicity, along with other encounters. As the road towards true inclusiveness and intersectional awareness in women's historiography continues to have a methods to go, Lerner performed a huge role in placing it on that path. Hat tip to Shaker BlueRidge for that NYT obit. [Note: If you will find less flattering items to be stated about Lerner, they've been excluded since i am not aware of these, not because of any deliberate intent to whitewash her existence. Please feel thanks for visiting discuss the whole of her work and existence within this thread.]

Question of the Day
What exactly are your preferred and least favorite uses of the title in popular culture? Books, films, tv shows, tunes, comics, anything…My title is not really used enough to possess a lot of a solution for that one. Most likely probably the most well-known popular culture reference using i'm the Allman Brothers' "Melissa," which is not even really in regards to a girl named Melissa around it's about a rambling dude who fancies a woman named Melissa. Wev. I love Erykah Badu's version, though.Porno Graffiti in addition have a song known as [CN: strobe effect at link] "Melissa," which someone placed on a combination Compact disc for me personally once. I love the song, despite the fact that I've no clue how it is about since i have don't speak/read Japanese.Apart from that, it's pretty slim pickings. Melanie Mayron's character in Thirtysomething was named Melissa, the only recurring television character I'm able to recall, and that i can't think about a significant movie character named Melissa whatsoever. (Actually, the only person I'm able to think about is Jami Gertz's character in Twister, that is pretty pathetic, lol.)And So I don't genuinely have a popular. I will tell you my least favorite utilization of my title ever continues to be because the title of the trojan that made national head lines. Which was an enjoyable couple of days. Meh.
